Poland’s longest trams are coming to Gdańsk. Measuring 46.8 metres and carrying up to 321 passengers each, the new vehicles will begin arriving in the city from 2029.
Gdańskie Autobusy i Tramwaje (GAiT) and PESA Bydgoszcz signed a PLN 524 million contract on 2 September for 20 new five-section, bidirectional trams.
The low-floor vehicles will have 100 seats, seven pairs of wide doors on each side, automatic air conditioning, 17 passenger information screens and USB-A and USB-C charging points.
They will also use cameras, radar and lidar as part of their safety systems. Four powered, steerable bogies are designed to improve ride quality and reduce noise.
The new trams are being prepared with the planned Gdańsk Południe–Wrzeszcz route in mind, adding capacity to the network as the city's southern districts continue to develop.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2029, with all 20 trams scheduled to arrive by September. The purchase will be financed through a preferential EU-backed loan under Poland's National Recovery Plan.
Once delivered, the new vehicles will increase GAiT's tram fleet to 159.
